Welcome to C&K Bundaberg Community Kindergarten 2011 Year!
MAY
Ann & Linda attended the annual C&K Brisbane conference & centre visits May 21t - 23rd. We attended sessions about teaching maths, documenting the “voice” of children, families, staff of the centre, supporting “Risk taking” & children’s strengths in our centres, using “reverse cycle garbage” creatively, programming “sustainability” practices and learning in the garden. Attended interesting keynote speakers, especially a session that shared articles & a story about 3 teaspoons and the cultural, ethical & moral understandings of children. What are children saying about their experience with prejudice, social status, gender equity, religion by selecting in a centre - a certain spoon (that is fought over), a certain bike, a seat, putting drink bottle or lunch box next to…? They have much knowledge already. Are they being taught fairly at home & at centre?
We saw the wonderful exhibition in the Convention centre which featured Jude & Jada’s –now famous-photo. Of course we were proud and it has encouraged us further to use photography to capture children’s thinking & their ‘voice’.
APRIL
Did you see the NewsMail? Our kindergarten has been notified by that we will have installed Solar panels this year as a part of the State Government funding to improve educational facilities. We are thrilled as it supports our sustainability goals and will save the kindy approx $400-500 in electricity.
Through Bundaberg Council we have been informed that we have been successful in receiving a Work place health & safety grant of $2,500.00 to improve the veranda surfacing & edging around the sandpit which are risk areas for trips/falls.
Kindy has had some generous donations (still from last years families) outdoor chairs, wood & all sorts of interesting paper, rolls & boxes.
Children‘s Library going well with lots of regular borrowing. If staff are occupied (remember the needs of our individual children come first) and you arrive later, please feel free to borrow or return a book yourself by writing it in the book provided. Thank you
The council changed the Show holiday date which in turn has affected us & staff this year will attend the C&K conference in Brisbane as last year we were unable to. Please note, families do not pay for Pupil free days or Public holidays.
MARCH
How great to have our new management committee elected & braced with enthusiasm for the year. I wish to warmly welcome our new team & hope you enjoy your individual positions very much. Please, know that I am here to assist, as is Ann Jenner. Sometimes it is advisable to make a time after or before session to run through things with us as the children must be adequately supervised and staff-child ratios need to be ensured (1 staff - 11 children). Thank you.
PUPIL FREE DATE WAS CHANGED
Next term the pupil free day is MONDAY, MAY 23RD - NOT FRIDAY, MAY 27TH.
This has been changed to coincide with the C&K Brisbane conference Ann & Linda are attending.
Dates will change for term 3 & 4 as well (scheduled pupil free dates). They are to be advised & consulted with Management committee.
Linda will be writing out referrals for some families this month recommending their child attend "speech therapy". Families can go directly on the waiting list at the Base Hospital (free service) or book through private professionals (Linda can give more information about this as needed).
Advanced notice - Pirate Pete (Entertainer) has been booked for Friday August 5th at 9:30am (at kindy) & both groups will be welcome.
C&K are currently putting together their dates for the management seminars that are held annually. These are free and are highly recommended for new committees, staff & interested parents.
Library at kindy has started each week so please remember to bring your Library bag every Tuesday (SF) & Thursday (JF). We do encourage families to take special care of these books, thank you.
THROUGH CHILDRENS EYES PROJECT-Our centre has elected to take part in this project which involved kindy children using a camera & photographing "their lives". We have begun teaching the children how to use the camera & invited them to explore this media. I look forward to sharing these with families & will seek final approval from parents when we select a group of photos to send to Brisbane.
